A blog on understanding deregulated energy market in Texas
One supplier, one renewal date, one summary bill: what you can combine across Texas locations and what stays per meter. ESI ID inventory, utilities that can't join, co-terming end dates, adding and closing sites, and who signs for franchise stores.
One number decides who writes most of your contract: 50 kW. The Texas rules that protect smaller accounts, what real business contracts say when those rules stop, and the questions to ask about pass-throughs, usage bands, exit fees, holdover and deposits.
No usage history doesn't mean no quote. How suppliers estimate a new warehouse from square footage and type of business, why a sister-location bill beats the prior tenant's, and the three clocks — utility, supply, market — that decide when power actually starts.
The median fast-food building uses nearly seven times the electricity per square foot of the median commercial building. EIA benchmarks by restaurant concept, where the power really goes, how the morning startup sets the demand charge, and a 10-minute bill check.
In Texas, one LOA releases your usage data and a different one authorizes a supplier switch. What a usage LOA lets a broker do, what it can't, how long it lasts, and the checks to run before you sign.
The number on your gas meter isn't always the number you're billed for. How to read the index, turn two readings into Ccf, apply your utility's pressure factor, and match it to your Texas gas bill.
Your wires utility owns and installs the meter, not your provider. The three request paths, what each TDU publishes on timing, what a smart meter records, and the metering charges on a commercial bill.
The number on your meter often isn't the number you're billed for. How to read kWh and demand registers, apply the multiplier, and match reads to your bill and Smart Meter Texas.
Business energy choice covers 16 states plus D.C. for electricity and 27 plus D.C. for natural gas, with caps and size limits in several. In Texas the wires utility decides: why Houston, Dallas and Lubbock can shop, and San Antonio, Austin and El Paso can't.
ERCOT's LMP is an energy price adjusted for congestion, with no loss component, unlike the three-part formula most explainers teach. How nodes, load zones, hubs and settlement point prices fit together, why West and Houston zone prices diverge, and what that means for an index contract.
A kilowatt is how much power your building draws at once; a kilowatt-hour is how much energy it uses over time. The conversions, the 15-minute rule that turns meter readings into billed demand, and why two Texas businesses with identical kWh can pay very different delivery bills.
ERCOT buys five reserve products to keep the grid at 60 Hz, and since RTC+B it buys them every five minutes. What each one does, what the market monitor says they have cost, and the PUCT rules on when a REP can bill them separately.
ERCOT's emergency ladder, what critical-load status really gets you, and the voluntary curtailment options Texas businesses can use: 4CP response, ERS, TDU load management, and the pending 12CP proposal.
Your ESI ID is printed on your REP bill, but it identifies a delivery point, not your address, so one building can carry several. Where to find it without a bill, why it runs 15, 17 or 22 characters depending on the utility, and why a lookup hit does not prove you can switch.
EIA's August base case is moderate — $3.14/MMBtu in 4Q26 and $3.62 in 1Q27 — but Henry Hub is not the rate on your bill. How Texas basis, load shape, and contract terms change the lock-now decision.
A Texas business can change REPs without changing its wires utility or scheduling an outage. The harder question is whether the existing contract makes an early switch worth it. The market process, the six ways exit fees are actually calculated, and the break-even math.
Electricity setup for a new Texas location depends on the premise, not one statewide checklist. Start by working out whether the address has a usable meter, needs a service upgrade, or is a true new-construction project — then run the right one of three paths.
Residents handle their own units. The property holds a second set of accounts nobody shops — corridors, pool, gates, site lighting, and every vacant unit. Which meters are yours, why they cost more than their size suggests, and how to take them to market without touching a resident.
One Texas apartment community can carry five metering arrangements at once, each with a different customer of record. Which ones an owner controls, what PUCT §25.142 does to the business case for submetered buildings, and the portfolio work that follows.
Twelve properties, sixty meters, nine suppliers and twelve unrelated end dates. The working inventory, what PUCT §25.475 guarantees and which of your meters actually get it, who has authority to sign, and a 90-day runbook.
Your Texas LDC bills in Ccf, your supplier quotes in Mcf, and NYMEX trades in MMBtu — and the conversion factor every online calculator uses is the national one, about 2% off for Texas. The units, the right factor, and how to normalize three quotes into one comparison.
A dry warehouse goes quiet after the last shift. A freezer never does — and that flat 24/7 shape is a procurement asset most operators never mention to a supplier. What sets a cold-storage load profile, and what a supplier needs to price it.
One fifteen-minute window sets the demand line on a warehouse bill — and in Oncor territory it can keep billing for eleven more months. How to pull your interval data, find the peak, and trace it back to the shift that caused it.
On EIA's published figures a refrigerated warehouse uses roughly 9x the electricity per square foot of dry space — so a single "warehouse" benchmark is useless. Sourced kWh/ft² by facility type, the math for your own square footage, and the six drivers that separate two identical-looking buildings.
ERCOT just broke 91 GW in record July heat. The three ways a 100°F week raises your commercial bill — cooling load, 4CP charges, and price spikes — and what to do about each.
There's no single average — but there is a sourced benchmark. Estimate your bill by business type using EIA CBECS intensity data, then see how to beat it.
CenterPoint, Oncor, AEP Texas, TNMP, and LP&L bill the regulated delivery half of your electricity — the part you can't shop. Here's what it covers and why it rose in 2026.
