How Agent Earnings Work

Energy broker pay is commission, not salary. Electricity and gas suppliers compensate the broker through a fee built into each contract's price, and as an Elite agent you earn commission on the contracts you close.

How to Become an Energy Broker in Texas

Texas law requires anyone who provides electricity brokerage services for compensation to register with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PURA §39.3555 and 16 TAC §25.112). There are two ways in:

  • Register your own brokerage. File the PUCT's notarized broker registration application, renew it every three years, and follow the broker customer-protection rules in 16 TAC §25.486.
  • Sell as an agent of a registered broker. PUCT guidance says individual employees and agents of broker firms don't register separately, and the registered broker is responsible for its agents' activity.
